There’s something about adding real wood smoke to everyday foods that takes them to another level. Smoked Chex Mix is one of those recipes that surprises everyone who tries it.
The ingredients are simple, the preparation takes only a few minutes, and your pellet smoker does the rest of the work. The combination of buttery BBQ seasoning, a touch of hot sauce, and two hours of gentle smoke creates an addictive snack that’s perfect for parties, football weekends, road trips, or simply keeping on the counter for family and friends.
The best part? You can customize it with your favorite crackers, nuts, or pretzels and make it your own.
Ingredients
The Snack Mix
1 cup Rice Chex
1 cup Corn Chex
1 cup small pretzels
1 cup mixed nuts (I used peanuts, which turned out great)
1 cup Club Minis Multigrain Crackers
1 cup Cheez-It Grooves
1 cup Snyder’s of Hanover Cheddar Pretzel Pieces
The Butter Mixture
1 stick butter
1–2 tablespoons Tapatío or Tabasco
2 tablespoons low-salt sweet BBQ rub
Optional: another 2 tablespoons BBQ rub to sprinkle on before smoking
Equipment
Pellet smoker or grill
Large disposable foil pan
Microwave-safe bowl
Silicone spatula
Instructions
Step 1 – Build the Snack Mix
Combine all of the snack ingredients in a large foil pan. Mix gently with a silicone spatula so you don’t crush the cereal or crackers.
Step 2 – Make the Butter Sauce
Melt one stick of butter.
Stir in:
BBQ rub
Hot sauce
Mix until completely combined.
I recommend using a BBQ rub that’s relatively low in salt so the seasoning adds flavor without overpowering the snack mix.
Step 3 – Coat Everything
Slowly drizzle the butter mixture over the snack mix while gently stirring.
Once everything is coated, sprinkle on a little extra BBQ rub and give it one final mix.
Step 4 – Smoke
Preheat your pellet grill to 180°F (or your smoker’s Smoke setting).
Place the foil pan on the smoker and cook for about two hours, stirring every 20 minutes to evenly distribute the smoke flavor.
Once finished, allow the mix to cool before serving.
Ken’s Tips
Hickory, oak, pecan, cherry, or competition blend pellets all work well.
Don’t skip stirring every 20 minutes—it helps every piece pick up smoke.
If you like heat, double the hot sauce.
Store in an airtight container and enjoy throughout the week...if it lasts that long.
